It was as dark as night and stormy. I felt a great sense of expectancy mixed with trepidation. There was a sense of evil in the air, so tangible and powerful it almost overwhelmed me. I seemed to drift, or to be drawn into a circle of near-transparent figures: white ghostly shadows hidden within flowing, luminous cloaks and cowls. As I gazed at them they seemed to shift and change shape as if blown by the wind.

Arzach and Moebius Then I became as transparent as they and my form was as theirs. I was one of them and part of a large circle that spanned a vast landscape. Mounds and barrows shaped themselves out of barren earth before my eyes and heaved from the ground beneath us, as did a whole series of standing stones, crudely carved. Five huge, unevenly balanced dolmens smeared with black soot and white lime ranged themselves at equidistant points. And although all these monuments were far away they seemed at the same time to tower above us. I was aware once more of the presence of absolute and malevolent evil. Fear gripped me again as waves of pure negative energy pulsed towards me from some invisible source. The figures began to close together, the circle grew smaller the evil grew more powerful and I sensed violence directed towards me. My instinct was to turn and run as far away as possible, to put distance between me and that black force.

As the circle of figures merged, a dark pulsating shape became visible like heat haze rippling out in perfect rhythmic circles. I felt then that my fear was shared by the other figures who had, at first seemed to compel me to stay, as if to perform some sacred duty.
