It was during this time of risk and change that I had a remarkable experience, painful and terrifying at the time, that not only confirmed me in my sense of the rightness of what I was doing but was to shape my future and dominate my thinking for years to come.

It was the night of May 1st 1973; the old Celtic feast of Beltene.

Lugh Faces the Evil Eye I had just sat down in an armchair in my own house to relax and unwind after a hard day's work when quite suddenly and inexplicably I found myself somewhere else.

I felt I had been hurled through time and space into a past I had never imagined, into a dark and sinister place full of scudding black clouds foreboding some terrible evil. I felt my hair prickle and my flesh tighten with fear; I was overcome with nausea and totally panic-stricken. I had never experienced anything like this terrible state of being. My senses were alert, I was wide awake but the faculties of speech and movement had left me. I could see very clearly that I was in the same room but no longer part of my own body. I did not go outside the room but yet I could see far beyond and I felt I was very far away.

The sense of sheer panic subsided but the fear remained as I slowly became aware of the scene before me.
