A PORTFOLIO. 1974.
CELTIA. 1975.
Some of the early drawings in the CELTIA series were first published in a loose-leaf slide-bound
volume titled JIM FITZPATRICK, a portfolio. Though never intended for direct sale, only as a
showcase for my early artistic work in the hope of attracting commission from publishers,
advertising agencies, record companies etc. 'A portfolio' found its way into the smaller, more
specialist bookshops of Dublin and London where it soon sold out.
That slim self-published black and white volume brought me a great number of interesting
commissions and gave me my start as an artist. London's Victoria and Albert Museum even purchased
my large pen and ink drawing of "Morrigan" (No.16) for their permanent National Collection.
From the money I made over the next year I published JIM FITZPATRICK: CELTIA, a collection of
my posters and drawings based on Irish mythology.
I included much new work in this volume and found the idea of producing drawings with a set
goal in mind a source of strong motivation. This established a work pattern I have followed
ever since. My particular temperament responds well to the disciplines and demands of a
working cycle linked closely to the turn of a complete year and the urgency of a knife-edged
deadline.
THE BOOK OF CONQUESTS 1978. THE SILVER ARM 1981.
CELTIA was a successful book, running into three editions and it brought my work to the notice
of a London publisher PAPER TIGER in 1976.
They expressed interest in producing books of my mythological paintings in full colour and we
agreed that I should produce THE BOOK OF CONQUESTS for them.
I had long had the idea of retelling the sagas of the Tuatha Dé Danann in illustrated form and
now here was the opportunity to realise that dream!
Little did I know that the next five years of my life would be totally dominated by this
project and its sequel, Volume Two of the CONQUESTS trilogy, THE SILVER ARM. That period of
time divided up roughly as follows: one full year for research and development of ideas, one
year writing and finally three years of continuous, exhausting and demanding drawing and
painting.
