My obsession with the Tuatha De Danaan loses none of its urgency as the years go by, but now I search beyond the superficial seduction of my subject matter in an effort to discover the primal meanings that lie obscured but preserved within those beautiful but cryptic legends and sagas of ancient Ireland.

A hidden world lies there; a mysterious middle kingdom timelocked in eternity: a world of powerful magic and arcane ritual. In these ancient tales and within the Boyne Valley mounds one senses a secret presence: the presence of a learned caste, the Druids. Their muffled forms stalk the supernatural darkness of our sagas and haunt the ruins of past glories that cast long shadows across our landscape.

The presence of the Druids is both tangible and tantalising and leaves future generations to investigate what remains of a highly developed religious ritualistic and unexpectedly scientific culture and speculate about the nature of the society that produced it. The key to their culture lies hidden within the material labyrinth of the mounds with their undeciphered symbols and precise mathematics and the linguistic structures of the sagas and folk-tales with their ritualistic repetition, invocations and formal enumeration of heroes.

We cannot pretend to have any real concept of the evolution of human civilisation and culture until we are prepared to deal realistically with the enigmas of its earliest development in the Boyne Valley and elsewhere in Ireland. The remains of that culture and its literary manifestation, the Early Irish Mythological Cycles, are clues to one of the most exciting historical puzzles of the Western World. The explanations and conclusions I have grown up to accept are now proving incompatible with fresh archaeological and scientific discoveries made in the light of new technology and which promise easier access to the secrets of the ancient civilisation that once thrived in this now oppressed and troubled land.
